Inspection Fixtures and Checking Gauges

An inspection fixture presents a part in a known position so measurements mean the same thing every time. Innovat3D designs checking fixtures, go/no-go gauges and CMM holding fixtures for UK quality departments.

Fixtures are designed around the drawing datums, so what is measured matches what is specified.

Problems this solves

  • Measurements that vary depending on who takes them
  • Flexible or thin parts that measure differently depending on support
  • Slow one-off setups on a CMM for routine batch checks
  • No quick way to check parts at the machine or on the line

Typical applications

  • CMM holding fixtures aligned to drawing datums
  • Attribute checking fixtures and go/no-go gauges
  • Profile and trim-line checkers
  • Hole-position and feature-presence checks
  • Line-side quick-check fixtures for operators

Benefits

Datum-correct

Location built on the drawing datum scheme, not convenience.

Repeatable measurement

Same support and constraint on every part measured.

Faster checks

Routine batch checking without a fresh setup each time.

Shop-floor usable

Simple enough for operators to use at the machine.

Who we work with

  • Quality and inspection departments
  • Subcontract manufacturers supplying to drawing
  • Production teams introducing in-process checks

How it works

  1. 01

    Review the drawing

Datums, tolerances and the characteristics that actually need checking.

  2. 02

    Fixture concept

Constraint scheme agreed before detail design.

  3. 03

    Design and manufacture

Built with stable location features and clear part orientation.

  4. 04

    Prove out

Checked against known parts so results can be trusted.

Frequently asked questions

Can you design a checking fixture from our drawing?
Yes. The datum scheme and tolerances on the drawing drive the design of the location and support.
Can inspection fixtures be 3D printed?
Often yes, particularly for attribute checks and CMM holding. Where measurement uncertainty is critical, stable metal location features are combined with a printed body.
Do you supply calibration?
We do not issue calibration certificates. Fixtures are designed so their critical features can be verified and monitored by your quality system.

Discuss your application

Send CAD files, drawings, photographs, dimensions, an existing part or simply a description of the manufacturing problem — whatever you have is enough to start. Based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Innovat3D supports engineering and manufacturing customers throughout the UK.
